Classic SMT divergence compares two swing highs or lows inside a time cycle. Sequential SMT (SSMT) applies the same idea to Quarterly Theory: every cycle is split into four quarters, and an SSMT forms when two consecutive quarters disagree with a correlated market. If NQ makes a lower low in this quarter than in the last one, while ES holds a higher low, that is a bullish SSMT.

The SSMT Detector QT is the indicator in The SMT Detector Pro that marks these divergences automatically, at every Quarterly Theory level at the same time. If SMT divergence is new to you, start with our guide to SMT divergence.

Quarterly Theory in one paragraph

Quarterly Theory, popularised by Trader Daye, treats time as fractal: a year, a month, a week, a day, a session and a 90-minute cycle each split into four quarters. Each quarter tends to play a role (accumulation, manipulation, distribution, then continuation or reversal), and the open of the second quarter, the True Open, is used as the reference price for the cycle. SSMT asks a narrower question: when price moves from one quarter into the next, did the correlated market confirm it?

The quarter levels it watches

All times are New York. Each row is a parent cycle and the quarter unit SSMT compares:

MO SSMTQuarterlyMonth quarters
W SSMTMonthlyWeek quarters, anchored to the month's first Monday
D SSMTWeeklyDay quarters, Monday to Thursday, with Friday as an optional fifth day

Two extra detectors sit alongside the quarters: ISMT for the 12-minute inducement windows each hour (:20 to :32 and :58 to :10), and D SMT for when price returns to a daily high or low that has stood for two days or more and only one market sweeps it.

Normal and internal SSMT

A normal SSMT is the classic case: your chart makes the new high or low across the two quarters and the comparison market fails to. An internal SSMT is the mirror image: your chart fails to make the new high or low (a lower high or a higher low) while the comparison market does. Both are shown by default, and you can turn either off. The comparison can also cross a parent boundary, from Q4 of one cycle into Q1 of the next.

True Opens on the chart

The Q2 opens are drawn as reference lines so you can see whether an SSMT formed above or below the cycle's True Open:

A bullish SSMT that forms below the True Open, in what Quarterly Theory calls the discount side of the cycle, is the textbook read. The same signal far above the True Open deserves more caution.

Comparison markets

Comparison tickers are picked automatically (ES against NQ, for example), and you can switch on a second ticker for dual-asset confluence or set your own symbols. The same pairing rules as the main SMT indicator apply, including gold and silver against DXY as inverse pairs. See SMT divergence in forex, crypto and gold for the full list.

Alerts

SSMT has its own alert conditions in TradingView: any bullish SSMT, any bearish SSMT, and one per level (Yearly, Monthly, MO, Weekly, Daily, Session, 90m and Micro). Our alerts guide walks through setting them up.

How it differs from the main SMT Detector

The main SMT Detector compares swings inside fixed time cycles (3m up to yearly). The SSMT Detector QT compares one Quarterly Theory quarter with the next. They answer different questions, so many traders run both: the main indicator for intraday cycle SMT, and SSMT for where the current quarter sits in the bigger Quarterly Theory structure. Pair it with Time Cycles QT to see the quarters themselves on the chart.

Common questions

Do the markers repaint? No. A marker stays as drawn, and you choose whether invalidated markers stay visible as history.

Which timeframe should I use? Higher levels need higher timeframes to show enough history; a 1-hour chart suits weekly and daily quarters, while 1 to 5 minutes suits session and micro quarters.

Is it available on its own? It is part of The SMT Detector Pro, claimed on Whop with your TradingView username.
