SMT divergence is usually taught on NQ and ES, but it works on any pair of markets that normally move together. The rule never changes: when one market takes out a high or low and its partner does not, the move lacks agreement. What changes from market to market is which partner to compare against, and for a few pairs, which direction counts as agreement.
The pairs The SMT Detector picks for you
With auto-detect on, the indicator chooses two comparison markets for the chart you open:
| Your chart | Compared with |
|---|---|
| NQ | ES and YM |
| ES | NQ and YM |
| YM | ES and NQ |
| RTY | ES and NQ |
| EUR/USD | GBP/USD and AUD/USD |
| GBP/USD | EUR/USD and AUD/USD |
| USD/JPY | USD/CHF and USD/CAD |
| USD/CHF | USD/JPY and USD/CAD |
| AUD/USD | NZD/USD and EUR/USD |
| NZD/USD | AUD/USD and EUR/USD |
| BTC | ETH and SOL |
| ETH | BTC and SOL |
| Gold | Silver, and DXY as an inverse pair |
| Silver | Gold, and DXY as an inverse pair |
Micro contracts (MNQ, MES, MYM, M2K) map the same way as their full-size versions. Every second partner in forex is chosen to move with your chart, so a disagreement is a real divergence and not just two markets doing their normal opposite thing.
Forex
Major pairs that share a base or quote currency move together. EUR/USD and GBP/USD are the classic pair: if EUR/USD sweeps its London low and GBP/USD refuses to follow, that is a bullish SMT on EUR/USD. Use the same New York sessions you would for futures; London and NY AM are where most forex SMTs worth trading appear.
Crypto
BTC and ETH lead the market, with SOL as a third check. Crypto trades all weekend, but liquidity is thin then, so weekend divergences carry less weight than ones that form during the New York session.
Gold, silver and DXY: inverse pairs
Gold and the dollar index usually move in opposite directions. So for gold against DXY, agreement means opposite moves: gold makes a higher high while DXY makes a lower low. The divergence is when that mirror breaks:
- Bearish SMT on gold: gold makes a higher high, but DXY does not make a lower low.
- Bullish SMT on gold: gold makes a lower low, but DXY does not make a higher high.
Comparing gold to DXY with ordinary same-direction logic gets this backwards, flagging normal behaviour as divergence and missing the real ones. The SMT Detector flips the logic automatically for the DXY leg, and still compares gold to silver the normal way.
Markets it does not recognise
If you open a symbol without a known partner, the indicator shows a notice on the chart instead of quietly comparing it to something unrelated. In Pro you can set any two comparison tickers yourself, and mark either one as inverse.
Common questions
Which pair gives the cleanest SMT? Pairs that are tightly correlated but not identical. NQ and ES, EUR/USD and GBP/USD, and BTC and ETH are the most widely traded.
Do the cycles change for forex or crypto? No. Cycles and sessions are in New York time for every market. Our kill zones guide covers which windows matter most.
